Lamu
Lamu County, Kenya
Lamu is a historic coastal town and island in northern Kenya, serving as the administrative center of Lamu County, which lies along the Indian Ocean near the Somali border and includes the mainland plus over 65 islands forming the Lamu Archipelago. Lamu Old Town, the county’s most famous site, is Kenya’s oldest continuously inhabited Swahili settlement (over 700 years) and a UNESCO World Heritage site recognized in 2001 for its unique coral stone architecture and intricately carved wooden doors blending Swahili, Arabic, Persian, Indian, and European influences. The town is famously car-free, with transport done on foot, by boat, or via donkeys through narrow, winding cobbled alleyways, preserving its tranquil, timeless atmosphere. About 150 miles north of Mombasa, the region has a warm tropical climate, pristine beaches like Shela Beach for relaxation and dhow-watching, and thrives economically on fishing, tourism, mangrove export, and traditional crafts like wood carving and embroidered kofia hats. Lamu County covers roughly 6,273–6,475 km², has around 144,000 residents, and faces challenges including inadequate infrastructure, water scarcity, and population growth driven by the major LAPSSET transport corridor project.
