Lan Su Chinese Garden in Portland, Oregon, is an authentic Ming Dynasty-style garden created as a result of a sister city collaboration between Portland and Suzhou, China, a city famous for its classical gardens.

The garden was constructed by over 70 skilled artisans from Suzhou who lived in Portland for several months to build the garden with traditional techniques, using handcrafted materials and more than 500 tons of stone shipped from China. Occupying a full city block in Portland’s Old Town Chinatown, the garden features classic Chinese garden elements such as winding pathways, pavilions, bridges, ponds, and a scholar’s residence, all designed to create a harmonious blend of art, architecture, design, and nature.

Its landscaping includes over 400 species of plants native to China, though the plants themselves were sourced locally due to import restrictions. The garden serves as a cultural landmark offering visitors a peaceful, immersive experience into Chinese heritage and traditions, enhanced by events such as Chinese New Year celebrations and tea ceremonies in its authentic teahouse.

The name Lan Su combines the Chinese characters for "orchid" and "awaken," symbolizing the garden’s spirit as a place of tranquil beauty and cultural awakening.
