Landeck Castle
Klingenmünster, Germany, Germany
Landeck Castle above Klingenmünster in Rhineland-Palatinate, Germany, was built around 1200, likely as a successor to an earlier destroyed tower castle to protect the nearby Benedictine abbey of Klingenmünster, with its first documentary mention in 1237 during a division among the Counts of Leiningen.
Owned jointly by Leiningen, Zweibrücken counts, Speyer bishops, and Electoral Palatinate, it saw expansions like a bridge tower by the late 13th century and survived damage in the 1525 Peasants' War before French troops razed much of it around 1680.
Fully owned by the Electors by 1709 until the French Revolution, the restored 1960s ruins feature the Palatinate's highest keep at 25 meters, offering sweeping views over the Pfälzer Ebene to the Odenwald and Black Forest.
