Landestrost Castle
Neustadt am Rübenberge, Germany, Germany
Landestrost Castle is a striking Weser Renaissance-style palace built between 1573 and 1584 in Neustadt am Rübenberge, Lower Saxony, Germany, by Duke Erich II of Brunswick-Lüneburg as his administrative seat and residence.
Originally constructed on the ruins of a 14th-century fortress atop the Rouvenberg hill near the Leine River, it formed part of a larger town fortress with fortified walls, bastions like the preserved southern one with casemates, and towers for defense.
After the duke's death in 1584 without heirs, construction halted unfinished, and the site later served as an administrative office, with modern restorations including a new north wing in 2014 and ownership by the Kulturregion Foundation since 1997 for cultural events.
