Landschloss Pirna-Zuschendorf
Pirna, Germany, Germany
Landschloss Pirna-Zuschendorf is a Renaissance country castle in the Zuschendorf district of Pirna, Saxony, Germany, evolving from an 11th-century medieval burg into a knight's estate granted as a fief to Kunigunde von Carlowitz by Margrave Wilhelm I in 1403, later becoming the Carlowitz family seat.
In the 16th century, Hans von Carlowitz built its distinctive two-wing structure connected by a passageway to an adjacent church, though it suffered damage in the Seven Years' War, declined into a kindergarten and storage under the DDR, and faced demolition until saved in 1988 as a seed cultivation site.
Restored with support from the Deutsche Stiftung Denkmalschutz in the 1990s-2000s, it now houses TU Dresden's botanical collections, including one of Europe's largest azalea displays, rare camellias, bonsai, and potted dwarf fruit trees amid reconstructed Baroque gardens.
