Laurenzana Castle
Laurenzana, Italy, Italy
Laurenzana Castle is a medieval fortress perched on a rocky outcrop above the town of Laurenzana in the Basilicata region of southern Italy.
Built in the 12th century on the site of an earlier Lombard stronghold, it occupied a strategic position that helped control the surrounding mountain routes and valleys. Over the centuries, the castle was controlled by several powerful rulers and noble families, including the Normans, Swabians, Angevins, Aragonese, and the Orsini del Balzo family.
As military needs changed, parts of the fortress were transformed into a noble residence while still retaining its defensive character. Although now partly in ruins, Laurenzana Castle remains the town’s most prominent landmark and a symbol of its long history. Its dramatic hilltop setting offers impressive views of the Lucanian countryside and reflects the region’s rich medieval heritage.
