Leptis Magna, located near Al Khums in Tripolitania, Libya, is an ancient city founded by the Phoenicians around the 7th century BCE and later developed under Carthaginian control before becoming part of the Roman Empire.

It is especially renowned for its remarkable preservation and grandeur achieved under Roman Emperor Septimius Severus, who was born there and extensively rebuilt the city, transforming it into one of the most magnificent cities of Roman North Africa. The site features impressive ruins including a large forum, a theater, a basilica, and extensive bath complexes, with well-preserved mosaics and sculptures.

Leptis Magna’s natural harbor facilitated its growth as a major center for Mediterranean trade and agriculture, contributing to its wealth and significance.

The city declined after repeated invasions, including by the Vandals and later Arab forces, and was eventually abandoned, its ruins buried by sand until rediscovered and excavated in the 20th century, now recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site reflecting a rich blend of Phoenician, Roman, and North African influences.
