Lewis Ginter Botanical Garden
Lakeside, United States
Lewis Ginter Botanical Garden near Richmond, Virginia, was founded in 1984 on land originally purchased in 1884 by Lewis Ginter, a prominent businessman.
The property first housed the Lakeside Wheel Club, a cycling venue, but after Ginter's death, his niece Grace Arents transformed it into her home and later bequeathed the land and funds to the city of Richmond to create a public botanical garden in his honor.
The garden now spans 82 acres and features more than a dozen themed garden areas, including a conservatory, children’s garden, and a community kitchen garden that supplies fresh produce to food banks. It attracts over 450,000 visitors annually, offers educational programs, and is recognized as one of the top botanical gardens in North America. The garden combines historical legacy with a mission to connect people to plants and conserve nature through its diverse plant collections and community engagement.
