Lichtenau Fortress
Lichtenau, Germany, Germany
Lichtenau Fortress is a well-preserved Renaissance fortress in the market town of Lichtenau, Middle Franconia, Bavaria, Germany, originating as a medieval water castle acquired by Nuremberg in 1406 from Frederick II of Heideck to serve as a strategic outpost against Brandenburg-Ansbach.
Frequently damaged in wars—including capture in 1449, total destruction in 1553 during the Second Margrave War, and a 1688 raid by Louis XIV's forces—it was rebuilt grandly from 1553 to 1630 by Wolf Jacob Stromer for 194,000 guilders, featuring bastions, casemates, defensive walls, and an inner courtyard despite its vulnerable valley location.
Today, this architectural gem hosts annual castle festivals, houses Nuremberg State Archives, and offers public access to its historic interiors.
