Lichteneck Castle
Kenzingen, Germany
Lichteneck Castle, located in Kenzingen, Germany, is a medieval spur castle built between 1265 and 1272 by the Counts of Freiburg.
First mentioned in records in 1290 as "Liethenekke," it was initially a stronghold for the Freiburg nobility. The castle was destroyed in 1433 during the Geroldseck conflict, subsequently rebuilt in the 16th century, but suffered final destruction on April 15, 1675, by French troops during the Dutch War.
Over the centuries, it passed through various noble hands, including the Counts of Tübingen-Lichteneck and later the Freiherren von Garnier. Since 1985, the ruins have been privately owned and actively restored by a dedicated association.
The castle ruins are only accessible during guided tours and are available for private events, featuring scenic views of the surrounding Kaiserstuhl region.
