Liebenstein Burgruine near Geratal in Thuringia, Germany, is a medieval castle ruin built in the 12th century by the Käfernburgers on a strategic hilltop, serving as a residence for the ministerial Lords of Liebenstein before passing to the Ludowingers in 1369 and later the Lords of Witzleben in 1434.

The Witzlebens expanded it into a comfortable residential palace by the mid-16th century, adding Gothic traceried windows and a ornate portal with their coat of arms, though it survived the Peasants' War in 1525 only to suffer fire damage in 1567 and gradual decay as locals quarried its stones.

Abandoned by the 17th century after military conflicts, the site—featuring remnants of its palas, walls, and bridge—now offers hikers free access to explore its history amid forested Thuringian Wald trails.
