Lilac Gardens-Hulda Klager
Woodland, Washington, United States
The Lilac Gardens at Hulda Klager in Woodland, Washington, were created by Hulda Klager, who began hybridizing lilacs in 1905 and developed over 250 varieties during her lifetime. Inspired by horticulturist Luther Burbank, she showed her lilacs annually starting in the 1920s.
The gardens feature more than 90 lilac varieties alongside Victorian gardens and a restored farmhouse built by her family in 1889. After her death in 1960, the gardens were preserved by the Woodland Federated Garden Club and became a nonprofit foundation in 1976 to maintain and restore the estate. The property includes a history museum in the converted barn displaying exhibits about Hulda’s life and work.
The gardens host an annual "Lilac Days" festival each spring during peak bloom, drawing visitors to enjoy the fragrant flowers, tours, and plant sales, continuing Hulda’s legacy as the "Lilac Lady of Woodland".
