Little France
Erlenbach bei Dahn, Germany, Germany
Little France (Klein-Frankreich), near Erlenbach bei Dahn in Germany's Dahner Felsenland, is a small 15th-century defensive tower ruin built in 1484 by knight Hans von Trotha as an outpost of nearby Berwartstein Castle.
Perched at 322 meters on Nestelberg's northern slope, its thick 3.2-meter walls feature rifle slits downstairs and cannon ports upstairs to crossfire the "Leichenfeld" (Corpse Field) valley alongside the main castle, with a hidden tunnel—now collapsed—once linking them.
Named "Thurm Frankreich" possibly for guarding against French threats despite the distant border, it was damaged in the 17th century during wars like the Thirty Years' or Palatine Succession and restored since 2005 for hiking access.
