Locust Hill Cemetery and Arboretum in Evansville, Indiana, was founded in 1855 on land originally homesteaded by the Robert Smith family and later owned by the Kirkpatrick family.
Situated on rolling, naturally wooded terrain, it covers about 67 acres and is the resting place of over 30,000 individuals. The arboretum portion, named the James Bethel Gresham Arboretum in honor of the cemetery’s most famous interment and World War I veteran, was established in 2017 and is recognized with a Level I Accreditation by the ArbNet Arboretum Accreditation Program and the Morton Arboretum.
The arboretum aims to create a healing, serene landscape that respects the dignity of those interred while promoting public appreciation of urban green spaces. It features more than 35 species of trees and woody shrubs, preserving the historic landscape and adding new plantings to enhance its natural beauty. The cemetery has a long history of Memorial Day ceremonies honoring veterans, and it remains a significant cultural and natural landmark within Evansville.
