Lok Virsa Museum in Islamabad is a vibrant celebration of Pakistan’s diverse cultural heritage, nestled in the scenic Shakarparian Hills. Officially known as the Heritage Museum, it was established in 1974 and later expanded to become the Pakistan National Museum of Ethnology. Spanning over 60,000 square feet, it is the largest museum of its kind in the country, offering a rich tapestry of exhibits that showcase the traditional lifestyles, crafts, music, and folklore of Pakistan’s many ethnic communities.

The museum’s architecture and layout reflect a deep respect for the living traditions of the people. Visitors are greeted by life-sized dioramas, intricate woodwork, embroidered textiles, and traditional musical instruments that bring to life the customs and artistry of regions from Gilgit-Baltistan to Balochistan. One of its most captivating features is the Sufis and Shrines Hall, which pays homage to the spiritual heritage of the country through evocative imagery and poetic inscriptions.

Adjacent to the museum is the Lok Virsa Heritage Library, a treasure trove of over 30,000 books and manuscripts on folklore, anthropology, and cultural studies. The museum also houses a media center that produces documentaries and audio recordings to preserve oral traditions and folk music.

Throughout the year, Lok Virsa hosts festivals, performances, and exhibitions that invite artisans and performers from across Pakistan to share their crafts and stories with the public.
