Lori Fortress
Tigran Mets Ave, Armenia
Lori Fortress, located on Tigran Mets Avenue in Armenia's Lori Province, is an 11th-century medieval fortress built by King David Anhoghin, serving as the capital of the Kingdom of Tashir-Dzoraget in 1065.
The fortress sits on a mountainous plateau about 1,490 meters above sea level, strategically positioned between the Urut and Dzoraget rivers. It was a significant political and trade center, housing up to 10,000 inhabitants during its peak. The fortress has massive stone walls with towers, complex water irrigation systems including bathrooms with heating and ventilation, and various buildings like palaces and churches that later converted into mosques and churches over centuries.
Lori Fortaleza witnessed historic events such as Mongol invasions and changes of rule among Seljuks, Georgians, Persians, and Turks, before losing strategic military importance in the late 18th century. Ongoing restoration efforts aim to preserve its walls, civic buildings, and bathhouses, highlighting its rich architectural and archaeological heritage.
