Verified Louise Arnold Tanger Arboretum

Pennsylvania, United States

The Louise Arnold Tanger Arboretum is an 11-acre arboretum located on the grounds of the LancasterHistory Museum and Research Center in Lancaster, Pennsylvania.

Established in 1959 through the efforts of naturalist Louise Arnold Tanger, who began planting trees around the museum's Wilson Memorial Building, the arboretum was designed by landscape architect Gustaf Malmborg.

It features over 100 species of trees from around the world, including two Pennsylvania State Champion trees, and includes specialized areas such as native plant pollinator gardens and an American Conifer Society Reference Garden known as the Dwarf Conifer Garden.

After Mrs. Tanger's death in 1959, her son Charles continued the care of the arboretum until his passing in 1991, after which a group called the Friends of the Tanger Arboretum was formed to maintain and conserve the grounds. The arboretum is open daily to the public for free and serves as a place for relaxation, education, and nature appreciation, hosting events and programs focused on plants, gardening, and environmental awareness.
