Luce Gardens at Mepkin Abbey in Moncks Corner, United States, form the heart of the abbey’s tranquil landscape and were originally created on the historic Mepkin Plantation estate that dates back to the 17th century.

The gardens were commissioned by Clare Boothe Luce after she and her husband Henry Luce, founder of TIME magazine, acquired the property in the 1930s. Designed by renowned landscape architect Loutrel Briggs, these gardens showcase winding paths, impressive live oaks draped with Spanish moss, curated flower beds, and river views that offer visitors a peaceful and reflective outdoor experience.

When the Luces donated the estate to the Trappist monks in 1949, the gardens became an integral part of Mepkin Abbey’s spiritual and contemplative setting. Today, known as the Nancy Bryan Luce Gardens, they remain open for public enjoyment, featuring seasonal plantings and sculptures, as well as contemplative spaces that reflect both the estate’s historic roots and the monastery’s quiet monastic life.
