The Lynn R. Lowrey Arboretum is a 285-acre living collection spread across the campus of Rice University in Houston, Texas. Named in honor of horticulturist Lynn R. Lowrey, it features about 4,200 trees and shrubs representing 88 species, with a focus on native plants from Texas and northern Mexico as well as other woody plants adapted to the Houston area's wet prairie climate.
Dedicated in 1999, the arboretum serves as an outdoor classroom supporting environmental education in biology, architecture, engineering, and literature. It also showcases historical botanical specimens like the Pershing Tree, planted by General John Pershing, and continues to promote the appreciation and study of the region's diverse flora.
The arboretum is open daily without charge and contributes to Rice University's recognition as a "Tree Campus USA" for its outstanding tree management and conservation efforts.
