Madenburg Castle
Eschbach, Südliche Weinstraße, Germany, Germany
Madenburg Castle above Eschbach in Rhineland-Palatinate, Germany, is one of the Pfalz's largest and oldest castle complexes, built around the late 11th century as a royal fortress on a Rothenberg cliff at 458 meters to guard the Rhine Valley and Kaiserbach gorge, first mentioned in 1076 as "Parthenopolis."
Passed among Leiningen counts, Speyer bishops, and Palatinate rulers, it endured the Peasants' War damage in 1525, Renaissance rebuilds like the Eberhardsbau, and Thirty Years' War occupations before French troops razed it in 1689 during the War of the Palatine Succession.
Sold as a quarry post-1800, the Madenburgverein saved and restored it from 1871, preserving its vast walls, towers, chapel remnants, and Burgschänke tavern for hikers' panoramic views.
