Magnolia Plantation and Gardens in Charleston, South Carolina, dates back to the late 17th century when Thomas and Ann Drayton established it as a rice plantation along the Ashley River.

The wealth generated by Carolina Gold rice, cultivated largely by enslaved Africans who brought expertise in rice farming, created the prosperity of the Drayton family. In the 1840s, Reverend John Grimké Drayton developed the famous romantic gardens for his new wife, planting azaleas and camellias that became among the earliest to be grown outdoors in South Carolina’s subtropical climate.

After the Civil War, the estate transitioned into a public attraction in 1871, welcoming visitors who arrived by steamship for guided tours often led by formerly enslaved individuals. The property also preserves historical elements including slave cabins and the family vault, serving as a poignant reminder of its complex history.
