Maiden Tower
Baku, Azerbaijan, Azerbaijan
Maiden Tower, known in Azerbaijani as Qız Qalası, is a striking cylindrical stone tower in the Old City (Icherisheher) of Baku, Azerbaijan, rising about 29.5 meters from a rocky outcrop close to the Caspian Sea and serving as one of the country’s most famous national symbols.
Its lower foundation is believed to date to the 6th–7th centuries, possibly built over much older structures, while the main upper part and its distinctive projecting section were constructed in the 12th century, likely as a combined defensive watchtower and possibly originally a Zoroastrian fire temple or observatory. The tower’s massive walls are up to 5 meters thick at the base and narrow upward, and inside there are eight storeys connected by a spiral stone staircase, a deep well cut into the rock, and small rooms that once may have been used for storage, ritual, or defense.
Historians identify the architect from an inscription reading “Kubey Mesud ibn Da’ud,” linking him to other regional round towers, and the tower’s name “Qız Qalası” more literally means “Virgin Tower,” commonly understood to refer to its legendary impenetrability rather than any female figure, although many local stories tell of a tragic maiden who jumped from the top to escape an unwanted marriage or cruel ruler.
Since 2000 the Maiden Tower, together with the nearby Shirvanshahs’ Palace and the Walled City of Baku, is part of a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and today it operates as a small museum where visitors can climb to the top for panoramic views of Baku Bay and the old district while learning about its history and the many legends surrounding it.
