Manningaburg
Krummhörn, Germany, Germany
Manningaburg is a small historic water castle in the village of Pewsum, within the Krummhörn region of East Frisia in Lower Saxony, Germany.
It was originally built around 1458 as a lordly seat of the Manninga family, one of the old East Frisian chieftain dynasties, and later passed to the Cirksena counts of East Frisia in the 16th century.
Over time, the upper castle was largely demolished and the remaining lower castle, built as a stone house with a wide moat and a Dutch‑style gatehouse, has survived as a compact, intimate complex in the center of Pewsum.
Today the site serves as a local museum that explores the history of the Manninga and Cirksena families as well as the wider story of East Frisian chieftain castles, and it also houses a popular wedding room where civil ceremonies are held each year.
