Manuka State Wayside in Hawaii is a 13.4-acre state park located about 19 miles west of Naʻalehu on the Big Island’s Mamalahoa Highway. The park features an eight-acre arboretum originally planted in the mid-19th century that includes 48 native Hawaiian plant species and over 130 exotic plants.
Visitors can enjoy a two-mile nature trail that passes through a transitional forest, ancient lava flows, a pit crater, and archaeological sites highlighting Hawaiian natural history. The area is surrounded by the expansive 25,550-acre Manuka Forest Reserve, home to rare native plants, anchialine pools, and the Hawaiian hoary bat. Facilities include restrooms, picnic areas, and a shelter for camping with a permit, but no drinking water is available.
The natural area offers educational and recreational opportunities in a scenic and ecologically diverse setting.
