Margalla Hills National Park, nestled at the foot of the Himalayas in Islamabad, is a lush sanctuary where nature, history, and city life converge. Spanning over 17,000 hectares, it’s one of Pakistan’s largest and most accessible national parks, offering a green escape just minutes from the capital’s bustle.

The park’s terrain is a dramatic mix of limestone cliffs, forested valleys, and seasonal streams, with elevations ranging from 600 to 1,600 meters. It’s a biodiversity hotspot, home to over 600 plant species, 250+ bird varieties, and 38 mammals—including leopards, barking deer, golden jackals, and Indian pangolins.

Birdwatchers flock here for glimpses of Himalayan griffon vultures, paradise flycatchers, and peregrine falcons. For outdoor lovers, Margalla Hills is a playground of hiking trails—Trail 3 and Trail 5 are local favorites—offering everything from gentle walks to steep climbs with panoramic views of Islamabad and the Faisal Mosque.

Daman-e-Koh and Pir Sohawa are popular viewpoints, while the Monal Restaurant serves up sweeping vistas with your meal. Beyond recreation, the park plays a vital role in conservation and education. It’s a living classroom for geology (with marine fossils from when this land was seabed), ecology, and sustainable tourism.

Despite challenges like urban encroachment and forest fires, community efforts and wildlife monitoring are helping preserve its natural charm.
