Margarethen Schanze
Neumünster, Germany, Germany
Margarethen Schanze, also known as Einfelder Burg, is an early medieval ringwall fortification on the western shore of Einfelder See in Neumünster, Germany, likely built in the 9th century to protect a Saxon settlement amid a buffer zone between Slavs, Danes, and Franks.
The semicircular structure features walls up to 4.5 meters high and 10 meters wide enclosing a nearly 100-meter-diameter interior, with archaeological evidence showing it was once fully closed and possibly included a foreburg.
A folk legend attributes it to Swedish Queen Margarethe during the Thirty Years' War, though excavations date it much earlier; today, it's a protected landscape monument with paths for hiking and enjoying the wooded site.
