Masnago Castle is a historic castle in Varese, Lombardy, that began as a medieval watchtower between the 11th and 12th centuries and was gradually expanded into an elegant noble residence.

Over the centuries, the Castiglioni family transformed the original fortress with additional buildings, gardens, and decorative features while preserving its medieval character. The castle is especially famous for its remarkable 15th-century frescoes, including scenes of courtly leisure and allegorical depictions of virtues and vices, which are considered among the finest examples of secular Gothic painting in Italy.

These artworks remained hidden for centuries before being rediscovered in the 20th century. Today, Masnago Castle houses the Civic Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art of Varese. Combining medieval architecture, Renaissance-era decoration, and modern art collections, it is one of the city’s most important cultural landmarks.
