Matthaei Sr. and his wife Mildred, with subsequent expansions including Matteson Farm and natural preserves. The site features outdoor display gardens like the Perennial Garden and Herb Knot Garden, a large conservatory designed by Alden Dow with tropical, temperate, and desert plant houses, as well as walking trails through restored prairies and woodlands.
