Medici Castle of Melegnano
Melegnano, Italy, Italy
The Medici Castle of Melegnano, located in the town of Melegnano south of Milan, is one of Lombardy’s most important historic fortresses.
Originally built in 1243 as a defensive stronghold to protect the Milanese countryside, it was later expanded by the powerful Visconti family and became a significant political and military center during the Middle Ages. In 1532, the castle passed to Gian Giacomo Medici of Marignano, whose family transformed parts of the fortress into an elegant noble residence.
The structure is known for its distinctive U-shaped layout, brick architecture, surviving towers, and beautifully decorated rooms featuring valuable 16th-century frescoes. Today, the castle is owned by public authorities and serves as a cultural landmark. Following restoration work completed in the late 20th and early 21st centuries, it hosts exhibitions, events, and museum collections, offering visitors a glimpse into the rich history of Melegnano and the region around Milan.
