Medici Fortress (Arezzo)
Arezzo, Italy, Italy
The Medici Fortress (Fortezza Medicea) is a large 16th-century fortress that stands on San Donato Hill above the historic center of Arezzo, Tuscany.
Built under the rule of Cosimo I de’ Medici and designed by renowned Florentine military architects, it was created to strengthen the city’s defenses and assert Medici control over the region. The fortress features an impressive star-shaped design with powerful bastions, reflecting the advanced military architecture of the Renaissance.
The site has even older origins, occupying an area that was once an Etruscan acropolis and later an important Roman and medieval stronghold. Today, the fortress is one of Arezzo’s most important landmarks. Visitors come to enjoy its historic structures, cultural events, exhibitions, and spectacular panoramic views over the city, the Arno Valley, and the surrounding Tuscan countryside.
