Verified Melfi Castle

Melfi, Italy, Italy

Melfi Castle is one of the most important medieval fortresses in southern Italy, dominating the town of Melfi in the Basilicata region.

Built by the Normans in the late 11th century on a strategic hilltop between Campania and Apulia, it became a key military, political, and religious center during the Middle Ages. The castle is closely associated with Emperor Frederick II, who expanded and strengthened it in the 13th century. In 1231, he issued the famous Constitutions of Melfi, an influential legal code for the Kingdom of Sicily, from within its walls.

Over the centuries, the fortress was enlarged and modified by the Angevins, Aragonese, and several noble families. Today, Melfi Castle remains remarkably well preserved, with its imposing walls and towers making it a landmark of Basilicata. It houses the National Archaeological Museum of Melfi and is widely regarded as one of Italy’s finest medieval castles.
