Merode Castle
Langerwehe, Germany, Germany
Merode Castle in Langerwehe, Germany, dates back to the 12th century when it was first mentioned in 1170 as a fief granted by Emperor Frederick Barbarossa to ministerial Werner from Kerpen, with the first clear reference to the castle in 1263.
Its stunning Renaissance-style moated structure, one of the Rhine region's finest, was largely shaped in the early 18th century by Field Marshal Jean Philippe Eugène de Merode-Westerloo, and it has remained in the Merode family since 1174.
Partially destroyed in World War II and again by a 2000 fire that gutted 80% of the interior, the privately owned castle is under ongoing restoration, hosting events like a popular Christmas market in its gardens while limiting public access.
