Miniatur Wunderland

Hamburg, Germany

Miniatur Wunderland in Hamburg, Germany, located in the historic Speicherstadt warehouse district, is the world’s largest model railway exhibition and Germany’s most popular tourist attraction, drawing over 1.3 million visitors annually. Opened in 2000 by brothers Frederik and Gerrit Braun, the meticulously crafted miniature world spans more than 1,300 square meters (nearly 14,000 square feet) and features over 1,000 trains with more than 10,000 carriages traveling on 15,400 meters (about 9.5 miles) of track. The exhibit includes incredibly detailed miniature versions of eight regions—Hamburg, the Harz mountains, Austria, Scandinavia, Italy, North America (with Las Vegas), Central Germany, and outer space—complete with 9,250 cars, 4,340 buildings, 263,000 tiny figures, 130,000 trees, and even a functioning airport called Knuffingen where planes take off and land. A fully computer-controlled day-night cycle changes every 15 minutes, illuminated by almost half a million LEDs that create a realistic atmosphere with moving vehicles, animated people, and dynamic events like fires and protests. Over 300 employees dedicated more than 795,000 hours to building and maintaining this 1:87 scale wonder, which continues to expand with new sections under construction.
