Monastero di Torba
Italy, Italy
Monastero di Torba is a historic monastic complex in Gornate Olona, Lombardy, near the archaeological site of Castelseprio.
Originally built in the 5th century as part of a Roman defensive outpost, it later lost its military role and became a Benedictine convent in the 8th century under the Lombards. The complex includes an ancient tower, a church, and monastery buildings that preserve rare medieval frescoes and provide valuable insight into early medieval religious life.
Its architecture reflects centuries of transformation, from a military stronghold to a spiritual center inhabited by nuns for more than seven hundred years. Today, Monastero di Torba is a UNESCO World Heritage Site as part of the “Longobards in Italy: Places of Power” network. Surrounded by woodland and carefully restored, it is celebrated for its exceptional historical significance and its unique blend of Roman, Lombard, and medieval heritage.
