Monforte Castle is the most iconic landmark of Campobasso, standing on a hill above the city and offering panoramic views of the surrounding Molise countryside.

Its origins are medieval, with records confirming its existence by 1375, although the site may have been fortified even earlier. The castle takes its name from Count Nicola II Monforte, who rebuilt and strengthened it after the devastating earthquake of 1456. Designed primarily as a military stronghold, the castle features sturdy stone walls, defensive towers, and a commanding position that helped protect the town.

Over the centuries it experienced periods of decline and various uses, including serving as a prison before being acquired by the municipality in the 19th century. Today, Monforte Castle is a national monument and a symbol of Campobasso.
