Mont Royal
Traben-Trarbach, Germany, Germany
Mont Royal is a 17th-century fortress ruin on a peninsula hill overlooking Traben-Trarbach in Rhineland-Palatinate, Germany, built between 1687 and 1692 by French Sun King Louis XIV and designed by military engineer Vauban.
Intended to house 12,000 soldiers and 3,000 horses as part of France's northern defensive line along the Moselle, it was self-destructed by the French in 1698 after the Treaty of Ryswick just 11 years later.
Archaeological excavations using original Parisian plans in the 20th century revealed remnants of massive walls, casemates, and vaults, now accessible via hiking trails with artifacts displayed at the Middle Mosel Museum.
