Mount Damavand, in Mazandaran Province, Iran, is the country’s highest peak and the tallest volcano in the Middle East, rising to about 5,600–5,670 meters in the Alborz mountain range just south of the Caspian Sea. It is a stratovolcano formed over the last few million years, now considered dormant, with hot springs, fumaroles, and small glaciers near its summit indicating that it is not fully extinct. The mountain’s snow‑capped cone and dramatic lava flows make it a striking landmark visible from Tehran on clear days and a popular destination for hiking, climbing, and skiing. Mount Damavand also holds deep cultural and mythological significance in Persian tradition, appearing in ancient legends and classical poetry as a symbol of power, national pride, and the resting place of heroic or divine figures.
