The Mud Volcanoes of Gobustan, located in the Gobustan Region of Azerbaijan, are among the country's most remarkable natural attractions. Azerbaijan has one of the highest concentrations of mud volcanoes in the world, and many of the most active and accessible examples are found in the Gobustan area, where cold mud, water, and natural gases bubble up from deep underground to create a unique, almost lunar landscape. Unlike traditional volcanoes, these formations do not produce lava. Instead, they continuously release mud and gas, forming small cones, craters, and bubbling pools across the barren terrain. Often visited together with the nearby Gobustan Rock Art Cultural Landscape, the mud volcanoes offer visitors a fascinating look at unusual geological processes and are considered one of Azerbaijan’s most distinctive natural wonders.
