Verified Münzenberg Castle

Münzenberg, Germany, Germany

Münzenberg Castle is a striking Romanesque hill castle ruin perched on a basalt hill above the town of Münzenberg in Hesse's Wetteraukreis district, Germany, often nicknamed the "Wetterau Inkpot" for its distinctive silhouette.

Built around 1160-1170 under Emperor Frederick Barbarossa as one of ten Staufer strongholds to assert imperial power, it features two prominent round bergfried towers—one 29 meters tall—with massive walls, high gables, and remnants of a palas, gatehouse, and outer bailey added later by the Lords of Münzenberg and House of Solms.

One of Germany's best-preserved High Medieval complexes, it now serves as a public landmark managed by state heritage authorities, offering guided tours, events, and panoramic views year-round. The ruins attract history enthusiasts with their preserved Staufer-era architecture and role in regional control until the 15th century.
