Museum Festung Dömitz
Dömitz, Germany, Germany
Museum Festung Dömitz is a museum housed within one of the best‑preserved 16th‑century lowland fortresses in northern Germany, located in the town of Dömitz on the Elbe River.
The pentagon‑shaped brick fortress was built between 1559 and 1565 under Duke Johann Albrecht I of Mecklenburg to secure the regional border and control the Elbe crossings, and it remains largely intact with its moat, bastions, casemates, and drawbridge.
In 1953 the fortress was converted into a museum, and today it presents regional and local history, including the development of Dömitz, the importance of Elbe shipping, traditional life in the “Griese Gegend,” and the story of the niederdeutsch writer Fritz Reuter, who was once held there under fortress arrest.
Visitors can explore permanent exhibitions in the main guardhouse, armory, and powder cellar, as well as special displays and cultural events held in the fortress courtyard and historic vaulted spaces.
