Naltar Valley
Gilgit-Baltistan, Pakistan
Naltar Valley is a hidden alpine sanctuary tucked about 34 kilometers from Gilgit in Gilgit-Baltistan, Pakistan. Cradled by the Karakoram range, it’s a place where pine forests, crystalline lakes, and snow-draped peaks converge into a dreamlike landscape. The valley is split into two main settlements—Naltar Bala (Upper) and Naltar Paain (Lower)—and is accessible via a rugged road that winds through the mountains, best navigated by 4×4 vehicles.
What makes Naltar truly magical are its lakes—Satrangi (Rainbow) Lake, Blue Lake, Pari Lake, and Firoza Lake—each with its own hue and mood, fed by glacial melt and surrounded by wildflower meadows. In winter, the valley transforms into a snowy wonderland, home to Pakistan’s oldest ski resort, operated by the Pakistan Air Force. The annual Winter Sports Festival draws skiers and snowboarders from around the world to its powdery slopes.
Naltar is also a biodiversity hotspot. The Naltar Wildlife Sanctuary shelters rare species like the Astor markhor, snow leopard, Himalayan brown bear, and over 30 species of birds. The forests are thick with juniper, pine, and birch, and the air carries the scent of wild herbs and alpine blooms.
