Namedy Castle
Andernach, Germany
Namedy Castle in Andernach, Germany, dates back to the 14th century and was originally built as a small late Gothic moated castle by the Husmann family, notable patricians from Andernach.
The medieval structure included the noble court of Niederhof. Throughout the 16th century, the castle buildings were extended by later Husmann generations. In 1633, during the Thirty Years' War, it was plundered by Swedish troops. After the Husmann male line became extinct in 1678, the castle passed by marriage to the von Klepping family, who sold it in 1700.
Later that year, Johann Arnold von Solemacher, chancellor of the electorate of Trier, transformed the medieval buildings into a Baroque pleasure palace by adding stories and two side wings. The Solemacher family occupied the castle until 1794 when French revolutionary troops used it as a hospital and powder magazine, severely damaging the interior.
The castle was renovated in 1856 and changed hands among industrial-era wealthy owners. In 1908, Prince Carl-Anton von Hohenzollern and his wife Princess Joséphine of Belgium acquired the castle.
