The National Aviary in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, is the only independent indoor nonprofit bird zoo in the United States and is the largest of its kind in the country. Established in 1952 as part of the Pittsburgh Aviary-Conservatory, it became a private institution in 1991 after city funding ended and was designated the National Aviary by the U.S. Congress in 1993.
It houses more than 500 birds from over 150 species, many of which are endangered, and features interactive exhibits like an underwater penguin habitat, free-flight shows, and expert-led feeding experiences.
The Aviary also focuses on conservation and education, operating breeding programs and habitat restoration projects around the world, making it a unique and engaging destination for visitors interested in birds and wildlife.
