The National Botanical Garden of Iran (Bāgh-e Gīāh‑Shenāsī‑ye Melli‑ye Irān) is Iran’s largest and most important botanical garden, spanning about 145–150 hectares on the southern foothills of the Alborz Mountains in the Chitgar area of northwest Tehran, near the Tehran–Karaj freeway.
Founded in 1968 and opened to the public in 2011, it was designed by Iranian experts with international consultants as the main center for horticulture and plant taxonomy in Iran and serves as a genetic storage facility for endangered plants.
The garden features 7 habitats representing Iran (including the Caspian region, Zagros, Alborz, Iranian and Turkestan vegetation, and desert and salt‑lake areas) and 6 global habitats (Himalayan, American, Japanese, African, and Australian), plus 8 thematic collections and gardens such as a rock garden, arboretum, wetland, desert plants area, a 1 km river, six lakes, two waterfalls, hills symbolizing the Alborz, Zagros, and Himalayas, a systematic area, fruit garden, and picnic pavilions.
