Neelum Valley is a breathtaking ribbon of wilderness stretching over 200 kilometers through the northern reaches of Azad Jammu & Kashmir, Pakistan. Cradled by the Lesser Himalayas and running parallel to the Kaghan Valley, it’s named after the Neelum River, whose sapphire waters wind through pine forests, alpine meadows, and charming villages.

The valley’s elevation ranges from about 1,200 to 4,000 meters, with snow-capped peaks soaring even higher. It’s a place where nature reigns—home to glacial lakes like Ratti Gali, waterfalls like Dhani Noseri, and serene hamlets such as Keran, Sharda, and Arang Kel. Sharda, in particular, is steeped in history, with the ruins of the ancient Sharada Peeth temple and university whispering tales of a scholarly past.

Neelum Valley is also a cultural mosaic. Languages like Hindko, Kashmiri, Shina, and even the endangered Kundal Shahi are spoken here, reflecting centuries of migration and heritage. The region’s remoteness has preserved its traditions, from wood-carved homes to handwoven shawls and hearty mountain cuisine.
