It replaced the medieval fortress that had administered the surrounding region from the Middle Ages through the 18th century, serving as a seat for local lords who collected taxes like the "Michaelisdienst" and maintained a dungeon for punishments. Today, the elegant "New Wildenstein" stands as a historic landmark in the Salzkammergut area, reflecting Austria's administrative and architectural shift from fortified castles to stately homes.
