Neuleiningen Castle
Neuleiningen, Germany, Germany
Neuleiningen Castle is a well-preserved medieval ruin crowning a hill spur at 270 meters above sea level on the northeastern edge of Germany's Palatinate Forest, overlooking the Eckbach Valley in the village of Neuleiningen, Bad Dürkheim district.
Built between 1238 and 1250 by Count Frederick III of Leiningen in an early quadrangular French-inspired design with four corner towers and innovative arrow slits, it served as a strategic stronghold alongside nearby Battenberg Castle for over 200 years under various Leiningen branches until captured in 1468 and destroyed by French forces in 1690.
The site features a stepped gable on the palas hall from the 15th century, expansive courtyard remnants, and sweeping views reaching Speyer Cathedral and Heidelberg on clear days, integrated with the adjacent medieval village's fortifications as a cultural monument open for free public exploration.
