Neurathen Castle
Lohmen, Germany, Germany
Neurathen Castle, also called Felsenburg Neurathen, is a unique rock castle near Lohmen in Germany's Saxon Switzerland, perched on sandstone formations close to the famous Bastei rocks and overlooking the Elbe River valley.
Built in the first half of the 13th century as a defensive stronghold for Bohemia against Saxon forces, it used natural rock chambers, carved passages, a cistern for water, and wooden superstructures, making it the largest such fortress in the area.
It changed hands through wars and inheritance until 1485, when it fell into ruin after being abandoned, later serving as shelter during the Thirty Years' War, and now features an open-air museum with paths and info panels for visitors to explore medieval life.
