New Bolanden Castle
Bolanden, Germany
New Bolanden Castle in Bolanden, Germany, was built in the 13th century by the House of Bolanden and first mentioned between 1258 and 1262. Throughout its history, it changed ownership several times, becoming a fief of the Electoral Palatinate in the 14th century and later belonging to the counts of Nassau-Weilburg, who expanded it in the 15th century.
It served as a residence for widowed duchesses of the House of Palatinate-Simmern in the late 15th to early 17th centuries. The castle was plundered and destroyed during the Peasants' War in 1525 but was rebuilt as a residential palace and administrative seat.
During the Thirty Years' War, it was occupied by Spanish troops and subsequently destroyed by the French in 1689 during the War of the Palatine Succession. Today only ruins remain, including some walls and traces of a neck ditch, with much of the structure demolished in the 19th century.
