Noli

Liguria, Italy

Noli is a charming small coastal town in Liguria, Italy, located in the Province of Savona about 50 kilometers southwest of Genoa and just a few meters above sea level. Historically, it was an independent maritime republic from 1192 until 1797, when it was annexed by Napoleon. The name "Noli" likely derives from the Greek "Neapolis," meaning "new city."

The town was once a naval power with a strategic position and strong shipyards, allied closely with Genoa to protect against nearby rival cities.

Today, Noli is recognized as one of Italy’s most beautiful villages, known for its well-preserved medieval center featuring narrow cobbled streets, a few remaining towers from its past of about 72 towers, and historical buildings such as the Romanesque Church of San Paragorio and the baroque Cathedral of San Pietro dei Pescatori.

The nearby Monte Ursino castle, built in the 12th century, overlooks the town and sea. Noli balances its rich maritime and medieval heritage with picturesque beaches, a fishing tradition, and natural surroundings, making it a peaceful destination for culture and coastal relaxation alike.
